Things are going to get a bit toasty

HEATWAVE conditions will be felt in North Queensland as temperatures soar above average across the region from Sunday.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster David Grant said locals could expect a heatwave of varying intensity.

“We are forecasting low intensity heatwave conditions for Townsville,” Mr Grant said. “The adjacent inland area will experience severe heatwave conditions.”

Forecaster James Thompson said temperatures would soar in Charters Towers.

“From Sunday we’re looking at 36C and Monday 38C, which is quite a bit above the February average of 33C,” Mr Thompson said.

He said Townsville’s coastal location meant sea breezes kept temperatures from becoming extreme.

“It’s quite finicky to forecast but it does look like most days in Townsville a sea breeze will keep temperatures below 35C,” Mr Thompson said.

“From Sunday we will see temperatures rise with 32C forecast for Townsville, which is just above the February average of 31C.”

Townsville mum and Townsville Suburban Medical Practice GP Helen Carless said the warm temperatures were expected when living in a tropical climate.

“I think the weather’s pretty predictable and we put up with the awful heat for a few months of the year but the rest of the year is glorious,” Dr Carless said.
