BUSINESS TO HIT A GAMES HIGH
A TOWNSVILLE business is going for gold becoming the first in North Queensland to secure a Commonwealth Games sponsorship deal.
Benchmark Scaffolding, which has its head office in Townsville, was appointed as the official scaffolding supplier by the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation yesterday.
The company employs 25 people in North Queensland and specialises in mining, road and rail bridges, defence and events.
Managing director Simon Boyes said the business would deliver the design and construction of 260 scaffold structures across 18 venues.
“It’s great that our local Queensland business, can showcase its expertise at an international event, here, in our own backyard,” he said.
Mr Boyes said Benchmark would hire between 20 and 30 additional new staff including labourers, project managers, draftsmen and a safety officer. “Each venue overlay is different but our works will include the construction of cable bridges, platforms, access ramps and special project structures to help broadcasters cover the Games, and patrons to enjoy the experience,” he said.
“Safety, of course, is our No. 1 across all projects.”
Mr Boyes said his team was excited to be a part of the Games.
“We’re looking forward to seeing the venues profiled to a massive broadcast audience ( in) April,” he said.
GOLDOC general manager, commercial, Cameron Murray congratulated the company on joining the Commonwealth Games’ “sponsor family”.
“Benchmark Scaffolding are the first North Queensland- based business to join the Games and they’ll perform critical works to get our venues Games ready,” he said.
“Our overlay program is in full swing as the venues transform from elite sporting hubs ready to welcome athletes and spectators from around the Commonwealth.” priority
