Drugs tip leads cops to arrest

- SAM BIDEY

AN alleged drug trafficker has been remanded in custody after facing Townsville Magistrates Court, charged with 23 offences.

Christian Murphy, 30, was arrested by detectives from Townsville’s Major and Organised Crime Squad after a raid on Friday.

Police seized a small quantity of cannabis, three ecstasy pills and $ 4100 cash on Friday from the unit on Richmond St, Hermit Park, where Murphy was arrested.

Despite the relatively small quantity of drugs discovered, Townsville Major and Organised Crime Squad officer- in- charge acting detective Senior Sergeant Brad Phelps said sufficient evidence was found for detectives to allege trafficking.

It would be alleged Murphy trafficked cannabis, ice and ecstasy – the three most prevalent illicit drugs in Townsville, Sen- Sgt Phelps said.

Possessing dangerous drugs, possessing drug- related utensils and pos- sessing proceeds of crime are among the string of offences Murphy is alleged to have committed.

He faced Townsville Magistrates Court on Saturday, where he was remanded in custody to next appear tomorrow.

Sen- Sgt Phelps said information from the public drew police’s attention to the unit that was searched.

“Anyone involved in the trafficking and supply of drugs is contributing to the harm these drugs cause to the community,” Sen- Sgt Phelps said.

“The Major and Organised Crime Squad will continue to target persons involved with the production, trafficking and supply of dangerous drugs.

“We encourage anyone with information on drug offending to contact police.”

Crime Stoppers has partnered with police for the “Dob in a Druggie” campaign, encouraging members of the public to report information.
