Warning of delays on roads

PARENTS dropping children to school this morning are being warned to make alternate plans with road closures to affect some of the city’s busiest roads.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay, which started yesterday, will continue its second day in Townsville this morning and the event involves 27km of rolling temporary road closures.

Townsville City Council Mayor Jenny Hill said due to temporary road closures journeys to work or school this morning may be affected and residents may need to make alternative arrangements.

The closure of Ross River Rd, the address of many of Townsville’s schools, will likely disrupt the schedules of many parents, students and workers.

“In terms of the road closures, I hope the people of Townsville will take note particularly of Ross River Rd and Charters Towers Rd on Monday and find an alternate way to work if they work in that precinct,” Cr Hill said. “I’m asking people to be patient.

“It’s going to be a fun time. There are a lot of people who are community champions who will be a part of this run. Road closures today: 7.20am - 9am: Boundary St, Charters Towers Rd ( from Bayswater Rd to Balls Ln), Ross River Rd ( Balls Ln to Gulliver St). 8am - 10am Ross River Rd ( Gulliver St to Elizabeth St), Elizabeth St, Wotton St, Ross River Rd ( Nathan St to Hatchett St), Hatchett St, Albert St. Try to get there early if you want to cheer your favourite friend on.”

Cr Hill said the closures would be “rolling” meaning the roads would not be blocked off for “too long”.

“There will be significant delays on some of the main roads and routes through the city,” she said.

Ross River Rd is dotted by numerous schools including St Joseph’s Catholic School, Mundingburra State School, The Cathedral School of St Anne & St James, Ignatius Park College, Holy Spirit Catholic Primary School and Cranbrook State School. There are numerous churches and businesses on the road.
