Man, 32, kicked, stomped

- SAM BIDEY

A MAN is in a serious condition after he was brutally beaten in broad daylight in a Townsville park.

The Vincent man, 32, was punched, kicked and stomped at Cambridge Park on Sunday.

He suffered severe head injuries and was last night in a critical but stable condition in Townsville Hospital.

Mundingburra Police Station officer- in- charge Senior Sergeant Graeme Patterson said a man attacked the victim in the dog park area about 1.50pm, punching him in the head.

“He’s continued to punch the victim a number of times until he fell on the ground,” Sen- Sgt Patterson said. “It’s alleged he then jumped on the victim’s head, chest and back.”

A passing driver witnessed the assault and called police but the offender had fled the scene before they arrived.

Paramedics rushed the man to Townsville Hospital with severe bruising and cuts to his face and head. He was in intensive care yesterday on life support but stabilised last night.

Sen- Sgt Patterson said police were unable to speak with the victim due to his injuries.

“We’re really concerned that this type of offence occurs,” he said.

“That is a shocking level of violence that was used and that’s resulted in such significant injuries to another person.

“The victim is in ICU but has stabilised and hopefully police will be able to speak with him later in the week.”

Detective Inspector Jason Shepherd said the two men probably knew each other.

It is understood a person of interest has already been identified. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Police Link on 131 444.
