Home truths on learning

-

CHELSEA Lee Smith says she isn’t a perfect person or parent, but she is passionate about helping her family grow and sharing that with others.

Originally from North Carolina in the US, Chelsea has been living in Townsville since February 2017 with her husband and three children.

As well as homeschooling her little ones, Chelsea is a parent educator who writes a blog called Moments A Day.

“I studied communications and women’s studies at university and I had children quite early on after only a few years of working,” Chelsea said. “So I started blogging as a way to dabble in writing as I always loved writing.

“I did sponsored work and sold books and now I’ve started to run parenting workshops.

“I started writing personal growth for children and parents.

“Parenting is hard work and it’s helpful to have some tools and I hope I provide a resource for people looking for answers and support.”

Chelsea said there were many people homeschooling in Townsville and while she was educated at school, she liked the flexibility teaching her own children offered.

“It lets us educate them at their own pace and focus on what they are interested in,” she said. “I think the biggest about both challenge is that the systems are set up for either school or homeschool.

“It would be better to mould the two as having the children all day all week can be challenging.”

Chelsea’s husband, from PNG, is an emergency doctor at the Mater Hospital.

And as for life in Townsville, the family are happy living here.

“I like the size of Townsville,” Chelsea said.

“It’s not too big but there are so many fun things for the family to do.”
