Burdekin pressure too much for rivals

- TRENT SLATTER

BURDEKIN is the only unbeaten team in the Townsville City Netball premier league this season after overcoming defending champions Neptunes in a 42- 41 thriller on Monday night.

There were only a few goals the difference at every break, but it was Burdekin’s excellent defensive pressure which got them home to leapfrog Neptunes into first place on the ladder.

“It was a very close game the whole way. We were very lucky to come away with that win,” Burdekin coach Cara Trindle said.

“Our midcourt Kimberley Bourke and Hannah Casswell played extremely well — defensively and putting their bodies on the line in attack which is good to see.

“Our defensive pressure throughout the whole court is what kept us in the game.”

The Silverlinks have assembled a new- look team this season, but they’ve made an impressive start together, claiming an opening round draw with Runaways followed by wins against Marian- Vixens and Saints.

Trindle admitted their attack still needed work, but she was delighted at their early progress with such a new squad.

“We’re a completely new squad to what we were last year. We’ve only got three girls that were in the team last year so a lot of new and young faces,” she said.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do through our attack, but if we can keep our defence up then the attack will come.”

Meanwhile, Saints are building momentum after a 55- 34 win over Marian- Vixens while Phoenix continued their good form beating Highlanders 51- 23.
