THANKS BE TO HEAVEN FOR DOWNPOUR

- ANDREW BACKHOUSE

THE coming of rain has taken on such significance in Townsville that a multi-denomination religious event is being planned to give thanks.

The Combined Churches of Townsville is planning a mass prayer event to thank God for recent rain which dramatically nearly filled the dam in two days.

Reverend Stuart Hall said the group wanted to thank God for the rain and pray for more to completely fill the Ross River Dam, which supplies Townsville with water.

Mr Hall said the group came together on February 22 to pray for rain, in an event that was attended by Mayor Jenny Hill and other Townsville City councillors.

“That was a Thursday night and from that point on the rain continued and the dam went from 15 per cent to 78 per cent,” he said.

“It’s time to say thank you to the Lord.

“It’s all very well to ask for things but we want to give people the opportunity to say thank you.

“We believe our payers were answered.”

Mr Hall said the event would feature prayers, music and the reading of scripture

The celebration service will be held today at Ross River Dam from 7pm to 8pm.

The invitation to the ceremony is extended to anyone in the community who would like to attend.

Guests are reminded to allow time to walk to the top of the wall and bring insect repellent and a torch.
