ELDERLY people have been told how to secure their homes and minimise their chance of becoming a victim of crime.

Officers from Kirwan Police Station and the Townsville District Crime Prevention Unit visited local residents at the Cranbrae Retirement Village in Cranbrook yesterday.

Police spoke with residents in their units about security and provided informatio­n and advice on preventing crime and staying safe at home.

Police spoke of crime prevention initiative­s, including ensuring all doors and windows are locked, keys are removed from security screens after locking, knowing neighbours and street movements and rememberin­g to call 000 in an emergency.
