WALKERS T O STEP UP FOR REFUGEES

-

TOWNSVILLE residents will “Walk for Justice” on Palm Sunday, for 65 million people made homeless by worldwide war and famine.

The national event will be held and run locally by Amnesty Townsville Action Group, Townsville Multicultural Support Group ( TMSG) and JCU student group SANTE ( Supporting All Nations Towards Equality).

Amnesty International Townsville spokesman Peter Hanley said the walk, as the name suggested, was to allow justice for refugees.

“There are people on temporary protection visas, who come to Australia seeking safety and still face the likelihood of getting forced out,” he said.

“We should show compassion to these people.”

Similar events will be held in cities throughout Australia on Palm Sunday — a week before Easter.

Townsville’s Walk for Justice will be lead by church leaders including Bishop Bill Ray, the Anglican Bishop of North Queensland and Bishop Tim Harris, of the Townsville Catholic Diocese.

Starting at the Rockpool at 4pm, the 1km walk will follow the Strand to the Gregory St Amphitheatre, where speakers will include recently resettled refugees.
