CITY MISSES BIG FALLS

- OLIVIA GRACE- CURRAN

SHOWERS are expected across Townsville in the wake of Cyclone Nora but the more substantial downpours are likely to be to the city’s north.

Cyclone Nora was downgraded to a tropical low yesterday after crossing the coast as a Category 3 storm near Pormpuraaw on the west coast of Cape York.

A number of communities were left battered but there were no reports of serious injury. LEFT: Jacob Carroll, 11, and his stepsister Tahlia Richardson, 11, were left with the remnants of their umbrella after a strong gust on The Strand yesterday.

EX- CYCLONE Nora will continue to increase showers and storms along the northern coast but Townsville can expect to miss out on any significant rainfall.

Townsville is expected to see up to 50mm of rain overnight and into this afternoon.

“We are forecasting widespread showers and isolated storms from ( yesterday) afternoon which will continue into ( today),” Bureau of Meteorology forecaster James Prescott said.

“From Tuesday things do ease a bit ... showers and storms will linger but will clear up on Wednesday.”

Ingham could expect up to 150mm overnight into today.

“There’s rain coming down from the north,” Mr Prescott said.

“The focus will be Cairns down to Ingham ... the further south you go, it drops off.”

Townsville had 24.8mm recorded from 9am Saturday to 6pm yesterday.

Townsville will experience belowaverage temperatures of 28C today and tomorrow.

“( Temperatures) will be back up to average conditions on Wednesday,” Mr Prescott said.
