Red light revs up motorists
A MOTORING group lobbying for a new Townsville facility says a court ruling to stop local enthusiasts racing should prompt “immediate action” to fund their project.
DriveIt NQ president Pat Driscoll said the organisation had been pushing for a purpose- built motoring complex because they’d pre- empted what would happen to the current track.
“We’ve been working for over a decade now to make sure that motor vehicle and motorcycle- based sports have a location to move to when the inevitable urban encroachment happened at the existing gokart facility,” he said.
“We are hopeful that this decision galvanises immediate action to gain funds to build the facility.”
The proposed DriveIt NQ p precinct has already been allocated land at Calcium by the Townsville City Council.
Mr Driscoll said DriveIt NQ needed council to help lobby t the State Government to match or better the $ 5 million in funding committed by the Federal Government.
“Motorsport would fund driver education, and the economic benefit of the project is $ 35 million a year,” he said.
“We’re looking for people to see the need for this and hopef fully this ( court) action will mot tivate them.”
The complete permanent driver education and motorsport precinct would cost $ 23.5 million.
