HOOKER boats, aren’t they made in Cairns? Most people ask the question, they’re not quite sure. Hooker boats are indeed made in North Queensland and this year celebrates 20 years of handbuilt Hooker fibreglass boats.

Boat manufacturing is scattered across Australia, with the central hub of Australian boat manufacturing for big and small boats being the Southeast corner of Queensland. Few people know that one of the best- built fibreglass boats in Australia is made right here in North Queensland. Cairns- based Hooker Boats has been making top quality fibreglass boats for 20 years. Husband and wife owners John and Carol Margetts and now with their son John are manufacturing premium quality “all glass no timber” boats for the Australian recreational and commercial fishing markets.

One of the key features of a Hooker Boat is no timber is used in construction. Traditionally, fibreglass boats have been made from timber which is then coated with fibreglass. If water penetrates the fibreglass, the timber can rot resulting in structural failure. Not with Hooker boats. No timber means no rot.

Hooker boats are renowned for their awesome handling through the chop and superb dry ride. Recreational fishers soon realised that these basic yet functional boats were ideal for them. Then the evolution began. Recreational fishers ask for a few features here and there and over time the boats have become both very functional in terms of fishing as well as comfortable and showroom quality.
