UFC boss slams McGregor over rampage

- NICK WALSHAW

IF IRISHMEN are so tough, why do they all speak English?

While an old gag is again doing the social media rounds this morning, nobody at the UFC is laughing after its megastar fighter Conor McGregor yesterday went on a violent New York rampage that involved smashing bus windows, injuring fighters, sparking an NYPD manhunt, even cutting up Sunday’s UFC 223 card.

Last night in Brooklyn, the 29- year- old eventually handed himself in to police for what UFC president Dana White labelled “the most disgusting thing that’s ever happened in this company”.

Not only is McGregor’s immediate fighting future now clouded, but his fighting fortune could also be under threat should victims choose to sue over the attack which occurred inside a carpark of the Barclays Centre, shortly after a press conference for UFC 223.

The event, which takes place tomorrow, is being headlined by a title fight for the Irishman’s stripped UFC lightweight crown.

The two men vying for the gold strap are Hawaiian Max Holloway and Russian Khabib Nurmagomedov, the latter of whom is said to be the cause of said violent outburst by the man dubbed Notorious.

Video of the incident clearly shows McGregor hurling a large metal object through the side window of a bus carrying UFC fighters – including Nurmagomedov.

Several fighters were reportedly hospitalised after the attack and forced to withdraw from the weekend’s card.

It is understood McGregor’s assault was aimed directly at Nurmagomedov following a hotel confrontation earlier in the week between the Russian and Artev Lobov, a longtime friend of the Irishman.
