‘ Velcro dogs’ seek humans to stick to

- KELSIE IORIO

IN A national first, every Australian state will combine for the Greyhound Adoption Program’s ( GAP) Adoption Day on Sunday, April 29, in a push to boost awareness of greyhounds as pets.

Queensland will host Adoption Days in two locations, one at the Yapper Valley Pet Resort in Woodstock and the other in Brisbane.

North Queensland GAP coordinator Gail Lane said the Townsville resort had 15 greyhounds in its care looking for loving homes.

“They’ve got the nickname ‘ the velcro dog’ because they like to stick to you all the time,” she said.

“As a pet they’re wonderful, they just love their humans, their humans are their world and they bond very quickly.”

Ms Lane said greyhounds were often a misunderstood breed, and made incredibly affectionate and easy- to- lookafter pets.

“People see them on the racetrack with a muzzle on running super fast and they think they’re a dangerous dog,” she said.

“I’ve been doing this job for eight years, and I’ve never met a greyhound that didn’t like people.

“They really love and enjoy people. We need to change the perception of these dogs.”

The Adoption Day will include a barbecue, face painting, a story corner, colouring- in competition and kennel tours.

“We hope we have a really good turnout on the 29th, even if people are just a bit curious to see what greyhounds are like as a dog,” Ms Lane said.

Townsville’s National Adoption Day will be held at Yapper Valley Pet Resort, Woodstock from 10am- 2pm.
