5.00 Lawyer touted as mayoral prospect

TOWNSVILLE businessma­n Michael Brennan might be headed for the mayor’s office.

Mr Brennan, a partner in insolvency firm Offermans Partners and regional chair for the LNP, has been mentioned as a possible candidate to take on Jenny Hill should the Laboralign­ed Mayor recontest the 2020 elections. Several leading figures in Townsville are said to be unhappy with the direction of the city and prepared to throw their support behind a challenger.

When approached for comment, Mr Brennan said he always looked at opportunit­ies to advance the city but had not been asked by anyone to run and was unsure if he even had aspiration­s for the top job.

“I don’t know. I am always looking at opportunit­ies ( and) if there is something I can do to help advance the city,” Mr Brennan said. “But long way between running for mayor.

“There’s a lot of things I can do in the interim to make a positive contributi­on.”

Mr Brennan is a lawyer with a Masters of Profession­al Accounting, a trustee in bankruptcy and official liquidator, holds senior positions in the LNP and the Australian Restructur­ing Insolvency and Turnaround Associatio­n and shortly will be announced as the new chair of the voluntary board for the Townsville Busi- there’s a that and ness Developmen­t which is supported council.

Mr Brennan agreed the city needed a turnaround plan.

“I’ve had a lot of people express dissatisfa­ction with the way the city is,” Mr Brennan said. “The rumblings are there. “I certainly haven’t been tapped by anyone to run.”

He said the next council election was a long way out.
