A NORTH Queensland farming family’s dedication to producing the finest tasting chicken has paid off, with Bellasato Farm taking out top honours at the prestigious delicious. Produce Awards.

Bellasato Farm owners Daniel and Leanne Cordner knew the moment they started their poultry business six months ago, raising Sommerlad chickens, that they were on to a winner.

Sommerlad chickens are robust, slow growing, Australian heritage table birds, specifically developed to thrive in Aussie farming conditions.

“There’s nothing like the taste of a chicken that is free to roam on mixed pastures,” Mr Cordner said. “It is a very different taste to the mass- produced birds raised in barns or with only limited access to pasture. Just like coral trout is among the finest tasting of all fish and the Wagyu beef the finest of meats, Sommerlad chicken is the finest of chicken meat.”

And the delicious. Produce Awards state judges couldn’t agree more, naming the Ingham farm as best in the State in the “from the paddock” category.

Bellasato Farm sells their chicken to local customers, restaurants and select retail outlets and in Townsville every third Sunday at Cotters Markets. They will be at Willows Markets this Sunday.

National winners will be announced in August.
