Eight tasked with turning Oasis into a vital reality

- SCOTT SAWYER

AN EIGHT- member unit has been confirmed to oversee development of The Oasis Townsville defence hub.

The State Government has appointed the advisory committee to liaise with Minister for Communities and Mundingburra MP Coralee O’Rourke on the development of the new hub for local ex- Australian Defence Force personnel.

The committee was confirmed earlier this month and the Oasis Townsville will be the key organisation leading the battle against social isolation, mental health, domestic violence, homelessness and unemployment in ex- servicemen and women.

The proposed 24/ 7 hub would be the go- to site for employment and welfare services.

The former Department of Primary Industries Biosecurity lab building, now vacant, was identified by three- star general Lieutenant General John Caligari, AO, DSC ( retired), and other founders of The Oasis.

Mrs O’Rourke said the committee would provide advice on planning and delivery of the project as it rolled out.

The new members of the advisory committee are: DSC Lieutenant General ( ret) John Caligari, AO; Cr Les Walker; Lt Colonel Sarah Molloy, 3rd Brigade Senior Health; Department of Communities, Disability Services and Seniors Acting Director- General Clare O’Connor; The Oasis Townsville directors Anita Brooker and Lynne Foster; Queensland Department of Veterans’ Affairs ( Commonwealth) Deputy Commissioner Leanne Cameron; Department of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Deputy Director- General Paul Herd.

Mrs O’Rourke said The Oasis Townsville was “one step closer to reality” now that the advisory committee was in place.
