PUB TALK NO BAR TO SCIENCE

- CHRIS LEES

A PINT and some education.

It’s an odd combination but it’s a winner, the CSIRO says.

The Pint of Science Festival is coming to Townsville from May 14- 16. Three events will each be held at the Heritage Exchange and Grill’d as part of the festival.

Heritage Exchange owner Emmanuel Bogiatzis said Townsville people were genuinely interested in science.

“This ( event) makes it a bit more sociable and a lot more relaxed,” he said.

“I think people are hungry to do something midweek, so it’s good to offer an alternative to the movies and things like that.

“We support it and it’s a cool thing to be involved in.”

This is the second year the Heritage Exchange has taken part.

Mr Bogiatzis said last year was a success and there was interest from customers.

The talks at the hotel will look at farming fuel, the Great Barrier Reef and marine stingers, among other things.

At Grill’d, conservation will be a main topic at two of the three forums.

Pint of Science Australia co- director Jirana Boontanjai said the festival was about having researchers connect with their local community in a familiar, relaxed setting like the pub. For more details and to buy tickets, visit www. pintofscience. com. au
