CADETS’ VITAL ROLE

- BETTINA WARBURTON bettina. warburton@ news. com. au

WHEN nearly 90 local army cadets take part in parades and dawn services across Townsville on Anzac Day, Michael Creedy admits he won’t be able to stop smiling.

“To see these young people, these Army Cadets, take part in all the parades and all the dawn services will make me very proud,” the officer commanding the 15 Army Cadet Unit said.

“It’s a significant year for the cadet unit as we celebrate 75 years in Townsville.

“The cadets have a deep understanding about the Anzac tradition and I think that shows in their faces when they take part in the Dawn Services and the parades.

“It’s great to see these teenagers being involved. The Anzac tradition is not being forgotten among our young cadets.”

Mr Creedy, whose two children have been army cadets, said the 15 Army Cadet Unit had a proud 75- year history in Townsville as a leading youth development organisation, training young men and women to take responsibility in roles of leadership within the community.

Mr Creedy’s volunteer positions working with young people earned him an Australia Day award in 2008.

“I have been involved in the army cadets child,” he said.

“I have such high regard for what the army cadets offer our youth.

“Cadet training teaches our teens a wide range of skills from self- reliance and teamwork to appreciating authority and provides opportunities for promotion.”

Mr Creedy said his Anzac since I was a Day would be fulfilling one.”

“It’ll be an early start for all the cadets as we’ll be at various dawn services across Townsville,” he said. “After the dawn service, it’s breakfast with the diggers, then on to the Belgian Gardens War Cemetery and then on to the parades. And one thing I know for sure, the cadets will do me proud.” a “busy but
