Blackhawk sends out warning to Magpies

- TRENT SLATTER

B A C K R O W E R A n d r e w Davey believes the best is yet to come from the Townsville Blackhawks as they target a fourth- straight win against Souths Logan on Sunday afternoon.

The Blackhawks announced themselves as a genuine threat in the Queensland Cup last weekend as they took down ladder- leaders Norths 30- 16 with a dominant performance through the forwards.

It was a huge confidence boost after winning just one of their first four games and Davey said the Blackhawks were determined to build on that against the second- placed Magpies.

“It was a very tough, physical game and it was a good indication of how we’re going forward,” he said.

“I think we’ve still got a lot to work on as a team, but we’re moving forward in a positive way.

“To take out Norths was a really tough effort.

“We talked about that at the start of the game, about being dominant and relentless in our defence and attack and taking it through them.

“We won that battle, but I think we can win it by a lot more.”

Halfback Jaelen Feeney ( illness) is expected to return this weekend while lock Joe Boyce is back from suspension to replace Cowboys backrower Shaun Fensom on the bench.

Centre Jordan Drew has been named to play after being forced off with his second concussion in as many games last weekend, but he’ll be monitored by the club’s medical staff during the week.

Combinations have been an issue for the Blackhawks at times with a new- look squad and a disrupted preseason, but Davey – who joined the club from Mackay – felt they were improving each week.

“It’s only early in the season and we’re still getting combinations in the middle and the rotations right,” Davey said.

“Our middles are working really hard and it’s taken a few games obviously, but it’s good to get that out of the way early so we’ll be good during the tough part of the season.”
