Student fight a disgrace

THE community has expressed its outrage at a video of Townsville high school students in an ugly fight at a popular shopping centre after it was shared on social media.

The incident involving Pimlico State High School students occurred on Thursday at Aitkenvale’s Stockland shopping centre’s food court PRINCE William and wife Catherine have named their new baby Louis Arthur Charles in a twist for British punters.

After days of anxious waiting for royal watchers, Kensington Palace put out a statement last night revealing the name.

“The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son Louis Arthur Charles,” the Kensington Palace statement said.

“The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge.”

The choice surprised royal watchers who had ruled out Louis because it is one of the middle names of Prince George.

Across major betting agencies Arthur had the best odds for a first name with Albert, James, Frederick and Philip also proving popular.

The name is a nod to Prince Philip’s grandfather Prince Louis Alexander of Battenberg and uncle Earl Louis Mountbatten who was assassinated by the IRA in 1979.

Louis is also one of William’s middle names.

Charles is an obvious tribute to William’s father, whereas Arthur is also one of the middle names of Charles and William.

The name Louis is likely to climb up in the ranks of the most popular annual baby names now it has been given the royal seal of approval. around 3.30pm. Mother- offour Michelle McMahon said she saw the video after her 12year- old daughter showed her. “I was disgusted,” she said. “It’s all getting out of hand now, with these bullies.”

Stockland Townsville have confirmed they are aware of the altercation and the two females involved have since been issued 12- month ban notices.

Stockland confirmed security attended the scene immediately with police attending shortly after.

Manager Malcolm Miller said the shopping centre would not tolerate any anti- social behaviour.

“Our absolute priority is to ensure the centre is a safe and inviting place for customers to shop and socialise,” he said.

“I applaud police and our security team for their vigilance and quick response time once again.”

Ms McMahon said she would now not allow her daughter to go anywhere without her.

“You just don’t know who will be targeted,” she said.

“They pick on girls for no reason and they do it in groups.”

Ms McMahon said the fight had scared her daughter.

“She doesn’t want to go out as much as she did in fear of the same thing happening for her,” she said.

Police Inspector Joe Kitching said everybody had the right to feel safe.

“This type of behaviour concerning,” he said.

“Police have taken action and will continue to take action to stop this type of behaviour so residents can feel safe and enjoy the great community we have here in Townsville.

“We continue to work with managers at the shopping is centres to ensure it is as safe a place as possible for members of the community to attend and do their shopping.”

Insp Kitching said the behaviour would not be tolerated. “More importantly, we would like to work with these people to modify their behaviour,” he said.

“The shopping centre is certainly not where we want to see people congregate and engaging in fights.”

One woman who saw the video said she didn’t know why people on it were laughing.

“It’s disgraceful,” she said.

“Violence is no way of solving things, trust me.”

Another woman suggested if students were not with a parent, a 6pm curfew should be put in place.

“It’s been happening at Stockland for many years yet nothing seems to be changing,” she said.

A Department of Education spokesman said Pimlico SHS had investigated the incident.

“The school has identified the students involved and disciplinary consequences have been put in place,” the spokesman said.
