Vile live export trade kept afloat on ocean of deceit

-

REGARDING live export, after continually being told live export was, since 2011, all hunky- dory and any one contradicting that was lambasted as uninformed, all I can say is no wonder those working in that field have to sign confidentially contracts.

The exporting of live animals overseas for killing is a monumental negative for Australia on so many fronts – compared to the obvious alternative.

A shake up in the culture of all animal- based industries is going to happen thanks in part to live exports which has opened the eyes of many as to what the attitude is towards animals in these industries.

Saying how much one cares about one’s livestock are hollow words compared to the actions.

After seeing primary producers megaphone their way down Thuringowa Drive to Aaron Harper’s office a few weeks ago objecting to tree clearing legislation, I couldn’t help but think when many were also live export supporters.

The underlying feature all this had in common was the sense of entitlement and a psyche that doesn’t look outside their own self- interest.

“Farmer” seems to be used as the password for “I should be able to do as I please” with regards to animals, the environment and the use of more guns. The sense of entitlement is gobsmacking. Most are not “farmers” but primary producers and graziers on large tracts of land.

Even though “farmer” should not mean by implication – always right!

I, for one, have always found the denials and excuses inflicted on the public to keep this vile, live export trade afloat, an affront to peoples’ collective intelligence.

Minister for Agriculture David Littleproud has said “Let’s let the light shine in” on the live export industry.

Except for the courage of people like whistleblower Faisal Ullah, we would still be hearing about how great it was on these ships. And this is all before the animals have even reached the hell awaiting them at their destinations.

Yes, Minister Littleproud “let the light shine in”. We will see how long this abusive, cruel industry can keep up the lies and pretence that this in an acceptable business model because it helps “farmers”. TERESA PATEL, Charters Towers.

?? DREADFUL FATE: Australia’s live export industry is a shameful reflection on ‘ farmers’ sense of entitlement. ??
