GAMING GOD OF WAR REINVENTED
of the most popular PlayStation series returns with a successful entry.
While still a god, Kratos suffers a haunted past, and it affects him in the present. Instead of loud, incessant rage, Kratos is quiet and deliberate in his new life. Having travelled to Midgard, home of the Norse Gods, Kratos found some peace with a new wife and son.
The death of his wife sends Kratos and Atreus on a quest to take her ashes to the highest mountain in the lands. To say God of War required reinventing is an understatement.
The story is driven through father/ son interaction, a level of emotion devoid from previous titles. By the end of the previous game, Kratos achieved revenge against the Greek Gods in a mad, streak of ultraviolence, leaving few left alive.
The story was a thin wrap over aggressive gameplay, so it was always going to end hollow.
It makes you wonder what could possibly be left to tell? Quite a lot apparently. I played the previous trilogy growing up. Liking them, but not loving them. The constant macho rage and violence only kept interest for so long.
It made me feel disconnected to the experience, so I approached this game with caution. You barely even need to delve into the reviews too much to see what a surprise hit this has become, and that surprise ties directly to how both the gameplay and story have matured. Definitely worth a look, even for new players.
