TELEVISION PLAY BRING ON THE REVOLUTION

- DANIELLE MCGRANE

star James Marsden says social revolutions such as # TimesUp and March For Our Lives have influenced the popular TV show.

The second season of the popular sci- fi western has kicked off, and the robot hosts in the western theme park have started to rebel against the humans who abused them as they lived out their western fantasies.

The revolution is primarily led by female characters played by Evan Rachel Wood and Thandie Newton, actors who have actively taken a stand against sexual harassment and misconduct.

“Thandie and Evan have been major, major advocates for these movements and it’s not lost on the showrunners and you see a lot of that come out in the writing,” Marsden said in Sydney.

The actor, who plays the heroic robot Teddy Flood, was in Australia to promote the show’s second season. While he’s careful not to drop any spoilers, he sees the similarities between Westworld and real- life events. “There are parallels that are running in the show that are influenced by, or motivated by, a lot of what’s going on in the world right now, and there are revolutions that are happening that are great and I think that it’s an interesting sort of mirroring going on there,” he said. “While the robot ‘ hosts’ on the show aren’t human, they do have a lot in common with people who have been oppressed or abused.”
