HOSTING ROLE FOR WORLD CUP BIG GOAL
NETBALL Australia wants to host another World Cup within the next 10 years and is looking at 2027 for a potential bid.
Australia last hosted the event in 2015 in Sydney where a world record crowd of 16,000 plus watched Australia beat New Zealand for the title.
The event was the first Netball World Cup held in Australia in 25 years.
Netball Australia boss Marne Fechner said the gap between tournament was too long and discussions were now going on with the International Federation of Netball about hosting another event within 10 years,
“We are looking at a major events strategy,” said Fechner, who ran the last World Cup before taking up her role as Netball Australia boss.
“We want to see Netball World Cup back in Australia.
“England host next year, New Zealand is bidding for 2023 so maybe 2027 or 2031 for us. We know what the last event did for our sport and we want it here again.”
The world netball championships are held every four years.
In Super Netball news, two teams from the competition’s top four will this weekend chase their first wins of the league.
Defending champions, Sunshine Coast Lightning, will take on the Queensland Firebirds after their firstround loss to the Giants.
The Magpies will take on West Coast Fever in their second game after being beaten by cross- town rivals the Vixens in Round 1.
