Brekky on menu as couple takes reins

- TONY RAGGATT

THE operators of the popular Tide Cafe are expanding into what they believe is the best location in Townsville.

Michael and Brooke Moffatt have taken over the food outlet at the Picnic Bay Surf Lifesaving Club on The Strand to provide a breakfast service from 7am to noon on Saturdays and Sundays.

The new outlet is called Beachside Brekkys.

Michael Moffatt said they had been keen to add a beachfront location to their Gregory St outlet and jumped at the op- portunity when the Picnic Bay club site became available.

“I think we have the best location in Townsville. You can sit and look out to Magnetic Island and the beach and we are right next door to Strand Park where many of the events are held,” Mr Moffatt said.

The couple founded Tide Cafe in 2014 offering locally roasted Bounce coffee and North Queensland Mungalli Creek milk.

Ms Moffatt has more than a decade of experience as a chef.

Tide also provides catering services.

They had opened a cafe outlet at Fairfield Central in 2016 but have decided to sell that business.

Mr Moffatt said they employed about 20 staff and their business was buoyant with turnover improving every month.

He said he often heard that the economy in Townsville was difficult and that businesses were struggling.

“I’m seeing good figures from what we are doing. It will be interesting to see what happens when the Townsville market does improve because every month we are getting better and better,” Mr Moffatt said.
