Wayne takes the hit

Only Benny has a problem as Napa’s dad comes out swinging

- TRAVIS MEYN

DYLAN Napa’s father has come out swinging in defence of the underfire Roosters prop as the NRL issued Wayne Bennett a “please explain” over his savage attack.

Bennett could be hit with a hefty fine by the NRL after slamming the league’s decision to not suspend Napa and claiming “bias against the Broncos” yesterday.

Napa was not charged by the match review committee for the controversial tackle that left Broncos prop Korbin Sims with a broken jaw.

The NRL has asked Bennett to clarify his comments before it considers whether to issue a breach notice to the seven- time premiership winning coach.

“There is a bias against the Broncos,” Bennett said.

“We won a game we weren’t supposed to win, so that would have pissed off the Roosters even more.”

Napa’s father yesterday claimed the Queensland Origin forward had done nothing wrong in the tackle that saw his head clash with Sims’s.

Stan Napa, a former Norths Devils and North Sydney Bears enforcer, urged Dylan to not change his aggressive approach.

“It wasn’t intentional, it was an accident,” he said.

“Dylan is mates with Korbin. It was an unfortunate incident that happens now and again.

“Wayne’s always got his views. Wayne likes to blow things up but they won the game. I don’t know what he’s going on about.

“I know Dylan’s character. Anyone that knows Dylan loves him.

“He goes hard but fair. There was no charge so he doesn’t have to change anything.

“He has made over 4000 tackles in the NRL and all of a sudden people are saying he should change his technique.

“He has only been suspended once and that’s not too bad for a guy that plays on the limit.”

Sims’s absence is another crushing blow to the Broncos ahead of Thursday’s clash against last- placed Parramatta at Suncorp Stadium.

Matt Lodge ( knee), Jaydn Su’A ( groin), Tevita Pangai ( soreness), Corey Oates ( hip), James Roberts ( achilles) and Tom Opacic ( concussion) were on restricted duties at training yesterday.

Veteran Broncos forward Sam Thaiday said Brisbane was running thin on forwards.

The club could be boosted by the return of Origin lock Josh McGuire ( ankle) and Test back Jordan Kahu ( jaw) for the Eels game.
