Have whale of a time as part of job

- SCOTT SAWYER scott. sawyer@ news. com. au

THERE aren’t too many prerequisites for this animal lover’s dream job.

A love of the Free Willy movies, a strong dislike of the sailors in Moby Dick and a set of steady sea legs should do.

And you’ll need to learn the ability to work with some of nature’s most magnificent animals in extremely close quarters while manoeuvring a 6m rigid inflatable boat.

Townsville Whale Watching is searching for a new coxswain to take charge of the lead boat ahead of what is set to be a busy whale watching season.

Owner Dave Stewart said he hoped to take a step back from behind the wheel as he was becoming too busy, and would provide support in the second boat as more bookings came in.

All that’s needed is an open driver’s licence and a coxswain’s licence and you could be up close and personal with some of the thousands of humpback whales making the journey from Antarctica to the warm tropical waters of North Queensland.

Mr Stewart said the ideal candidate would hold knowledge of the whales and be personable with guests with an environmental mindset.

“It’s very exciting when you’re seeing the breaches,” Mr Stewart said.

He said watching two males engaged in “bull fights” was exhilarating and the fearless young calves approaching the boats made for incredible experiences.

Meanwhile hoping to fill petrolheads their pockets come Townsville 400 time can score a few days’ work at the event.

Positions going from July 6- 8 include corporate box attendants, runners ( with responsible service of alcohol certification), baristas and kitchen staff.

The pay ranges from $ 24$ 34 an hour for your efforts.
