YOU CAN BET THIS WILL BE FUN

- VICTORIA NUGENT

TOWNSVILLE’S casino looms large in the history of the family behind restaurant A Touch of Salt.

Now the owners are paying tribute to that history. Roulette and blackjack will take a starring role at the Salty Blackjax food and wine festival at A Touch of Salt this weekend.

Peter Brine moved to Townsville from Tasmania in 1986 with wife Christine and his sons Mark and Michael, taking a job at the Sheraton Breakwater Casino as the Keno manager.

Over the next 20 years he worked his way up to casino manager before deciding it was time for a change.

“I bought Touch of Salt for my son Michael and his wife Melissa,” Peter said. In 2006 Mark decided to join them. Ever since the trio have worked together with Michael in the kitchen and Mark specialising in events.

“Over the years Michael has constantly changed the menu and things rarely get repeated,” Peter said.

“We have to keep evolving and bringing in new people.

“It’s nice to think so many people who were involved in the casino back then are still living in Townsville and we’re hoping to get a lot of those people to come along.”

Food and drink tickets will be available for purchase at the festival, with the casino games included in the price. The Salty Blackjax festival will take place on Sunday, June 10, from noon- 6pm. Tickets are $ 15 and are available from townsvilletickets. com. au.
