Putting parents to test on NAPLAN

- LAUREN MARTYN- JONES

PARENTS are being asked whether their children are stressed unnecessarily by NAPLAN tests in a new statewide review of the literacy and numeracy assessment.

Education Minister Grace Grace is seeking the feedback of parents about the controversial standardised test, which is under review at both a federal and state level.

As part of the Queensland Government’s evaluation of the yearly test, Ms Grace is calling on parents to candidly answer a questionnaire about their experience with the test, including whether they have resorted to pulling their kids out of NAPLAN because of the pressure.

Ms Grace is also asking parents whether they believe their school spends too much time prepping kids for NAPLAN tests.

“Since becoming Education Minister, I have been constantly approached by parents, principals and teachers about their concerns with the NAPLAN tests,” Ms Grace said.

“After 10 years of NAPLAN, the timing is right to have a look at the tests to see what is working and what isn’t.”

The state- based review of NAPLAN is taking place while the terms of reference for a federal inquiry into the assessment program is being finalised.

P& Cs Qld president Gayle Walters said she welcomed the chance for parents to have their say.

“We encourage all parents to complete the survey and, if at all possible, get along to the consultation sessions so that the parent voice is heard as part of this important review,” Ms Walters said.
