OFFICE FAR FROM USUAL

- CHRISTIE ANDERSON

CONCRETE floors, vintage posters, a skateboard hanging on the wall, dozens of pot plants and a multitude of knick- knacks combine to make 665 Flinders St a one- ofa- kind office.

It’s home to design studio TBD, which has just moved into the bigger office after being located at The Hive on the eastern end of Flinders St.

Instead of the conventional corporate office furniture and carpet, they’ve created a base that reflects the creative nature of their business – including a ping pong table.

TBD owners Travis Farley and Jarrad Wild said they wanted to create a space that encouraged collaboration.

“There is always music playing and we have a table in the middle of the office to create a space for us to sit with cli- ents and for us to sit around together and work together,” Mr Farley said. “It’s a beautiful space and we like the fact it has high ceilings and it’s a little bit older with floorboards upstairs and older fixtures.

Mr Wild said: “It’s definitely been refreshing to come to a space like this.”

The office is 160sq m and spans two levels with huge windows that let in plenty of natural light.

The pair said while their previous office was tucked away, they now had street presence with a bright blue shopfront to help raise their profile in Townsville.

They now also have convenient on- street parking for their clients.

The business offers a full range of design services from creating websites to logo design and brand identity.

It caters for everyone from small sole- trader businesses to large corporations and organisations such as the Townsville City Council.

Mr Farley said the business’s name, which stands for To Be Decided, had an interesting backstory which was integral to the business’s brand.

“The guys that owned TBD previously were writing out their business plan and for the business name they wrote TBD to come back to it but it stayed and I guess we’ve just leveraged it and used it,” he said.

“We think that every solution for every client is to be decided because there is always a unique answer.

“For our business cards we’ve actually included 584 alternative acronyms for TBD.”

These alternatives range from “Tony Betrayed Dianne” to “Tormented Board Directors”.
