University claims first points of TDRU season
NORTH Ward Old Boys captain Daniel Withers likens a draw to “a little bit like kissing your sister”.
But as Townsville District Rugby Union’s operations coordinator, he had mixed feelings after University secured their first points of the season with a 24- all draw at Mike Carney Toyota Park on Saturday.
Having endured a number of beltings in their return to the competition after a few seasons’ absence, University was outscored four tries to three but still clinched a share of the spoils.
The Old Boys scored with five minutes to go to level scores and pressured University’s line in the closing stages, but couldn’t find the breakthrough to secure the victory.
“A draw is a bit like kissing your sister. They were pretty happy with the result but we were disappointed with it,” Withers said.
“They’re a gutsy side and they’ve got some army guys now, which helps them at this time of the year.
“They capitalised on a lot of our errors and played some good footy.
“It ( result) is good for the competition, but obviously disappointing for us not to get the win.
“University has obviously had some pretty tough weeks this year, but outside of ( top two sides) Brothers and Teachers everybody else is competitive with each other on their day.”
Meanwhile Teachers Wests’ quest for a fourth straight premiership continues to gather momentum after scoring 14 tries in an 82- 0 rout of Ross River, with Aiden Turner bagging five tries.
In the other match of the round, last year’s grand finalists Brothers proved too strong for Burdekin Cane Toads 38- 15 at Ayr.
