The Department of Defence has moved to reassure the community nothing has gone ‘ fowl’ in the recruitment process for a new feathered ambassador.

The Bulletin revealed in November a new wedge- tailed eagle mascot had been found for the 2nd Cavalry Regiment following the death of Warrant Officer Class 2 Courage in October.

The new recruit, Trooper Courage, is an experienced 12- year- old female living on the Gold Coast at the Broadwings Raptor Training and Conservation Centre.

It was initially thought Trooper Courage would move to North Queensland in January, but that was delayed as 2Cav has been carrying out deployments to the Middle East, training and providing support to a variety of Combined Arms Exercises and community events.

“The unit is working with the current owner of the new eagle mascot Courage to renew the biosecurity permit to allow the transfer to the unit,” a Defence spokeswoman said.

The new Courage will undergo Initial Employment Training with unit soldiers who will be her handlers until the deployed forces parade in late July, where she will be marched into the Regiment as a qualified Royal Australian Armoured Corps soldier.
