MPs unite to oppose return of ‘ narcissist’

- SAM BIDEY

HERBERT MP Cathy O’Toole has called Clive Palmer a narcissist “completely out of touch” with real North Queenslanders as he prepares to dive back into politics.

Ms O’Toole said Mr Palmer was taking a leaf out of US President Donald Trump’s book with his recent billboard advertising calling to “make Australia great”.

“Saying ‘ make Australia great’ is just Trumpism at its best,” she said.

She said Mr Palmer would be unlikely to revive his political career in Townsville following the closure of his nickel refinery at Yabulu because of the impact that had on families directly involved and the wider Townsville community.

Dawson MP George Christensen said he found Mr Palmer’s use of a Trump- like slogan bizarre but after having billboards up all across the state it was clear he was going to have another shot at politics.

“It was blindingly obvious that he was going to do something,” Mr Christensen said yesterday.

“The billboards are a bit weird and the big books that he sent every MP; a collection of all his press releases and speeches from his time in parliament was a bit weird.

“I expect given the stench that remains around the Yabulu closure that voters in NQ will be particularly harsh.”

Both MPs predicted Mr Palmer would throw millions of dollars at an advertising campaign as he did when his party first entered the political arena, but the northern representatives believe the controversial businessman will not experience the same success he did before.

Neither expected any threat from a Palmer- endorsed candidate in their own seats at the next election.
