Political farce falls flat

- DENIS MAY, Annandale.

IT seems our favourite redhead is back in the news and for the wrong reasons again.

Pauline reminds me of the heroine of the serials of the old black and white movies where no matter what dastardly deed is done to her by the villain or in this case villains ( enter Stage Left Fraser Anning and Brian Burston) she gets saved more times than Malcolm Turnbull has done backflips.

Now these pair also remind me of the famous in the 1940- 50s comedy duo, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello who performed the also well known baseball sketch “Who’s on first?”

I could cast Mr Burston as the straight man Abbott and Mr Anning as the comic, Lou Costello on the assumption that Brian Burston had some 20 years involvement with One Nation would qualify him as the perfect straight man to the comic’s antics. Let us examine the evidence our so called “straight man” gives us, the mug punters of Australian politics.

We could say after such a long period of association with Ms Hanson he must have been used to her personality. Yet all of a sudden his relationship with Ms Hanson has broken down irrevocably.

He has known the meaning of loyalty to One Nation, has been elected by those who support the policies of One Nation yet all of a sudden he is now an independent.

Both of these two political clowns if unhappy with the leadership or policies of One Nation should have finished the term as a One Nation senators and tried to change internally the things they felt were wrong with either the leadership or policies of One Nation.

Let’s look at the comic in politics — in this case Fraser Anning playing Lou Costello. This is the man Ms Hanson approached to replace Malcolm Roberts ( who was a casualty of the cull in the dual citizenship debacle) in the seat of Gladstone but as Mr Anning had future plans to relocate to the USA to be a part of his son’s business venture no response was forthcoming and Ms Hanson was placed in the position of interacting through Harry Anning, his brother, while Fraser Anning was overseas. Fraser Anning was also a long term acquaintance, of some 20 years of Pauline Hanson.

In due course, Mr Anning served two months as a senator but walked out of a meeting with One Nation members where supposedly Ms Hanson gave him quite a serve. The media reported recently after an hour of being sworn in as a senator he decided to quit One Nation and be an independent. It seems the sticking point was the retention of David Goodridge who was also Malcolm Roberts’ adviser but both James Ashby ( One Nation) and Ms Hanson thought he was disloyal to Mr Roberts. Mr Anning has, since leaving One Nation, sacked Mr Goodridge. So here we have a person who demanded public support from Ms Hanson despite not speaking to her or contacting while overseas to discuss his future just before or during Malcolm Robert’s stoush with the High Court.

And they reckon Barnum and Bailey was the best circus on Earth? We’ve seen nothing yet to compare with this bunfight.

?? WHO’S ON FIRST? Bud Abbott, right, and his partner Lou Costello, do their famous baseball sketch. ??
