PET PROJECT WITH A HEALTHY IDEAL

- OLIVIA GRACE- CURRAN

A TOWNSVILLE woman is calling on the community to help raise funds to pay for the vet bills of neglected animals.

Kirsty Greig was inspired to establish Dollars for Dogs in 2017 after adopting her rescue dog Oscar ( pictured).

“I just saw the need for someone to help out the rescues,” Ms Greig said.

In the wake of the closure of the RSPCA animal shelter in Townsville, Ms Greig is urging locals to fundraise to help independent rescuers Townsville Foster and Rehoming and Angel- Paws.

“Whatever money we raise I pay directly into the vet accounts of the rescue groups for desexing, immunisation, worming, fleaing et cetera,” she said.

She is upset about the sheer number of animals being surrendered in Townsville.

“People are just giving them away on Facebook. It wasn’t as prominent before because they had somewhere to surrender the animals and now there is such a long waiting list,” Ms Greig said.

Dollars for Dogs raised $ 12,500 to help with the medical treatment of rescue dogs in 2017.

“It is such a problem area in Townsville, the unwanted and abandoned animals – they don’t have a voice for themselves,” Ms Greig said.

Dollars for Dogs is holding a monster garage sale today, with all of the profits going to the cause. Hundreds of locally donated items, including toys, books, clothing and shoes, are up for grabs. The sale is on from 7am at 4 Mahogany Court, Bushland Beach.
