Denied by defending All England Club champion Roger Federer in a cliffhanger last week in Stuttgart, Kyrgios lost a tense Fever- Tree clash with last season’s Wimbledon finalist Marin Cilic at Queen’s Club.
Kyrgios led Federer 3- 1 in the third- set tiebreak in Germany and basically lost to Cilic because of two unforced errors The final of the A Grade Singles has been played with Myrna Dwyer the winner and Roma McGrath runner- up. Kyrgios will rise three places to No. 18 when the rankings are issued tomorrow, a timely and vital climb ahead of Wimbledon’s seeding announcement next week.
Wimbledon uses its own formula, based on grasscourt performance, to tinker with seedings and, given his performances this season, Kyrgios seems certain to be promoted.
If he can climb inside the top- 16 seedings, he will receive important protection for the first week of the tournament.
The 2012 winner, and runnerup in 2013 and ‘ 17, Cilic plays Novak Djokovic in the Queen’s final after the Serb fended off Jeremy Chardy 7- 6 ( 7- 5) 6- 4.
