Burdekin stay in top four

- KEAGAN ELDER

BURDEKIN has maintained its place in the Townsville and District Rugby Union’s top four with a win against nearest rival Charters Towers.

The 36- 5 win on Saturday narrowed the gap between third and fourth placed Charters Towers and Burdekin to a point.

Burdekin co- coach Brendan Casey said the home win at Casalegno Field marked a move in the right direction.

“We kept working towards how we wanted to play,” Casey said.

“We did some really good things with our game plan and structure.”

Burdekin centre Lachlan Gullotta crossed twice for tries, but Casey said he faced uncertainty for this week’s game against North Ward after suffering a groin strain.

Gullotta was joined on the Burdekin scoresheet by Brendan Bunyan, Liam Marshall and Jai Blakey.

Kieron Richardson was the only tryscorer for the undermanned Charters Towers.

Casey said Burdekin will have to tighten up on errors and be clearer with decision making if his side is to get the better of North Ward on Friday.

“If we could eliminate our errors we could be matching it with the other competitive sides,” he said.

In the weekend’s other results, Teachers West hammered University 93- 0 and Brothers thrashed Ross River 93- 5.
