AFFORDABLE family fun is how Townsville Show manager Chris Condon describes one of the city’s most popular annual events.

An estimated 60,000 to 65,000 people are expected to pour through the gates of the showgrounds for the Townsville Show over the long weekend after it starts tomorrow evening.

Mr Condon, who has managed the show for the past 16 years, said he was proud the Townsville Show had one of the cheapest admission prices in the country.

“The show committee acknowledge that people are doing it tough and we acknowledge that to ensure people can afford to go to the show, we need to keep the admission prices down,” he said.

“We have done that and we have also acknowledged the need to offer a full program of free activities at the show.

“Families on a budget don’t have to spend too much to have a good time at the show.”

Mr Condon said admission prices to the Townsville Show, which starts tomorrow at 5pm and runs until Monday night, were “substantially cheaper” than Mackay and Cairns.

“In Townsville the entry prices for a child is $ 5, in Mackay it’s $ 15 and in Cairns it’s $ 11,” he said. “We want the show to be available to all so it has always been important to keep the gate price down.”

Mr Condon said the list of free activities and events at the show included the demolition derby, highwire motorcycle thrill show, monster trucks, wood chopping, extreme bicycle, the big top entertainment ( circus), a reptile kingdom, a petting farm and the wheel of death.

“I encourage visitors to pick up a program to see the list of free events, which includes something for the children and something for adults,” he said. “Of course the nightly fireworks is always a big hit and the centre ring events attract the crowds year in, year out.”

Mr Condon said the Showmen’s Guild would provide quality entertainment in the form of the most exhilarating and thrilling rides such as The Beast and the Crazy Coaster as well as the The Spook Castle and the King Rollercoaster. >> Go to townsvilleshow
