Compassion the key to raising funds

-

STUDENTS and staff at St Margaret Mary’s College have been helping people in other countries through CARITAS’s Project Compassion.

Project Compassion is a fundraising and awareness- raising appeal which takes place annually throughout the six weeks of Lent. Money is sent to those less fortunate over a wide range of countries.

In developing countries life is very different from our lifestyle here in Australia, and some 1.1 billion people in these countries have inadequate access to clean water, and 2.6 billion people lack basic sanitation. Did you know that at least 80 per cent of humanity live on less thany $ 10 per day? The purpose of Project Compassion is to spread awareness about these people’s plight, and to help them have better access to clean water, proper sanitation and a good education.

This year many fundraisers have taken place at SMMC. The first took place on Shrove Tuesday, where students bought pancakes at lunch time, donating as much money as they wanted. Many homerooms held small fundraisers such as bake sales, sausage sizzles, Easter hampers and more. As well as this, a donation box for Project Compassion could be found in every homeroom.

Students have donated generously to the project, and put a lot of effort into fundraising and spreading awareness in our community. This money is going to a great cause, and students and staff at SMMC should be proud of all the work they have been doing to help those less fortunate. At St Margaret Mary’s College we are also taught about COMPASSION from our Benedictine Values of The Good Samaritan Sisters — “But a Samaritan while travelling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with compassion.” ( Luke 10: 32- 34)
