‘Savage’ mauling as pets turn on neighbour who tried to stop dog attack

- SCOTT SAWYER

A BUSHLAND Beach mother was savaged by dogs in a brutal attack which forced council officers to destroy two of the pets.

The 48- year- old had rushed to her neighbour’s house after reportedly hearing screams for help about 5.35am yesterday.

Two dogs, believed to be staffordshire bull terriers or pit bulls, were attacking another at the home on Coutts Dr but turned on the woman when she arrived to help.

Police described it as an “aggressive dog bite” and neighbours said some of the bites had left bone exposed. The woman was bitten on her neck, arms and leg and was rushed to Townsville Hospital where she remained in a stable condition late yesterday.

A neighbour, who asked to remain anonymous, recalled trying to help and said the attack had been savage.

“She’s lucky to be alive if you ask me,” he said.

He said there had been issues with the dogs previously and it is understood previous complaints were made by residents to the Townsville City Council about dogs barking and es- caping from the property.

The neighbour said her lacerations had been “very deep”.

Council officers were continuing their investigations into the attack and a council spokesman said the third dog which had been attacked had been taken to a vet for treatment.
