Rockers get party started

- OLIVIA GRACE- CURRAN

ROCK fans and revheads gathered under the Watpac SuperTop to celebrate a milestone for racing in North Queensland last night.

Hard rock bands Baby Animals and Hoodoo Gurus kicked off celebrations for the 10th anniversary of the Townsville Supercars weekend.

Townsville locals Sally Elliot and Donna Lloyd planned to spend their entire weekend socialising at the region’s biggest sporting and entertainment event.

“We came for the fun, excitement and the vi- brancy,” Ms Elliot said. “It brings the community together and out- of- towners.”

Tayla Waters of Bohle Plains said it was her eighth year in a row of attending the Townsville 400.

“It draws a lot of people and it’s a great event for the city,” Ms Waters said.

Townsville mates Ben Gup and Terry Evans came with dressed- in- blonde wigs in anticipation of Saturday’s headlining musician John Farnham.

“We’re here to drink beer, enjoy motorsport and listen to music,” Mr Gup said.

They said it was always great to bring motorsport to North Queensland.

Four more of Mr Gup’s mates will don their own Farnham wig for the man himself tonight.

Farnham has performed at previous Supercars events around Australia but this will be his first visit to the event in Townsville.

Fellow rock royalty and Aussie icon Daryl Braithwaite will also headline the 10th anniversary concert of the event tonight.

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said having the Aussie music legends headline the event was a big drawcard for local and international travellers.

Tickets are still available from Ticketek.
