Dumbrell’s ultra- consistency earns him Super2 round rewards

- TRENT SLATTER

HE couldn’t snare a race win, but Paul Dumbrell’s consistency across the weekend was rewarded as he claimed the round honours for the Dunlop Super2 Series at Reid Park.

The championship leader was runner- up to Garry Jacobsen in Saturday’s opening race before Chris Pither beat him home in yesterday’s second event.

Dumbrell ( pictured) admitted it was a little bit disappoint- ing to not win a race in Townsville, but he said he was happy to consolidate his lead from Pither as they battle it out for the Super2 crown.

“We got a few points on Chris ( on Saturday) and he got a few back ( yesterday) so not a bad weekend, but we just weren’t really quick enough,” Dumbrell said.

It was a heartbreaking weekend for young gun Macauley Jones after he was twice denied a maiden Super2 victory when his car had rear sus- pension issues. Jones was in the position to comfortably win both Townsville races before he was bizarrely struck down with the same suspension problem at the same point in the race. Pither started on pole yesterday before Jones got the jump on him at Turn 1 and the race winner admitted he didn’t think he had the speed to get back if Jones had a clear run.

“He was on song out there. Obviously all weekend he’s been up the pointy end and I didn’t have much for him ( yesterday),” Pither said.

“We were certainly neck and neck and he was making a couple of little errors where I might gain a few tenths of a second, but never enough to really be a threat to him.

“He was the better man this weekend and he probably should have had two first places to his name. I’m just glad I was the next guy in the queue to pick up the pieces.”

Jacobson finished second for the round after his win on Saturday and he said it was special moment with his mother watching from the stands for the first time this season.

“My mum broke her leg the week before Christmas so this was the first round she could get to,” Jacobson said.
