Townsville Bulletin

Community leader has an eye for the news

-

IN recognition of NAIDOC week the Townsville Bulletin has invited a representative from the indigenous community to act as guest editor for tomorrow’s edition.

Given this year’s theme is “because of her, we can” a female leader has been chosen to help celebrate the role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders play as role models in the community.

Muriel Bin Dol will be tomorrow’s guest editor.

As a leader in the community, Ms Bin Dol ran in the 2016 local government elections with the aim of becoming the city’s first indigenous councillor.

A Torres Strait Islander, Ms Bin Dol said at the time she hoped to bridge the gap between the council and Townsville’s indigenous community.

“In terms of closing the gap, pride plays such an important role in our culture and regardless of the outcome of the election we really need to come together as a community and start representing all sectors of the community a little better than we currently are,” she said.

“I’d like to see our city show greater pride in its indigenous identity.

“We have a really rich and diverse range of indigenous people in the community doing lots of things.”

Ms Bin Dol grew up in Townsville and has worked in the public service for 15 years, as an executive manager.
