BUSINESS Award’s a blast for Tony
BUILDING a business from scratch has been a passion for award- winning Townsville business owner Tony Scott.
The founder of blasting and coating company Bare Naked Industries also loves what he does.
“I have never once not wanted to come to work,” Mr Scott said.
“I’m happy enough to work on what are my hobbies all day.”
Bare Naked Industries, winner of the business solutions title at this year’s NQ Chambers Business Awards, has a reputation for providing solutions.
The company developed a technique for stripping the inside liners from out- of- date fire appliance cylinders so the cylinders can be reused, which has provided a source of work throughout Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.
Cylinder suppliers are keen to know how it’s done but the technique, developed by Bare Naked Industries, is something of a trade secret.
The company is perhaps better known locally for providing restoration services for metals including aluminium, stainless steel, copper and brass, and particularly for motor bikes and cars. But they do restoration work on all manner of goods, even antique prams.
“We’ll have a go at most things,” Mr Scott said. “We have a few areas that feed the business. If one side is a bit quiet, it’s not detrimental.”
Mr Scott is a former long distance truck driver with a love of motorcy- cles. Part of the business is selling, retro- fitting and restoring bikes.
One of the business’ mechanics was trained in Germany by HarleyDavidson and Mr Scott recently started an apprenticeship as a mechanic and is also studying business marketing.
He started Bare Naked Industries underneath his Townsville home in 2009 with a small soda blasting unit.
“The jobs got bigger and bigger and the equipment grew with the jobs,” Mr Scott said.
“It was just me for quite a few years but in the last four years we have had the luxury of some staff.”
The business now employs five people and Mr Scott said he was continuing to grow the business.
They recently bought a Rhino coating dealership to provide protective coatings for utility vehicles.
“We are conservative in business,” he said.
“I like to know the outcome of something before I commit.
“Building a business from the ground up really has been a passion of mine.”
