Scherian wants Lightning to pile on pain

- TOM PRIMMER

SUNSHINE Coast Lightning mid- courter Laura Scherian has urged her side to adopt a more ruthless attitude today against the Collingwood Magpies.

The Sunshine Coast host the Magpies in Round 11 of Suncorp Super Netball, with a win possibly propelling the Lightning into the top four.

With just four rounds left to play, the Lightning need a big win to elevate themselves above the Queensland Firebirds and into fourth place. The Lightning are desperate to bounce back from a last- start 58- 57 loss to West Coast Fever.

“It’s disappointing losing those close games but it also puts a lot of fight into us wanting to win the next one,” Scherian said.

“We’re definitely working on pushing out our leads. We get two or three goals up and we let our opponents get back into the game. We’re working on pushing out that lead to three or four, getting to five or six and building from there.”

Lighting wing defence Maddy McAuliffe highlighted the importance of her side’s next four games, three of which feature teams below them on the ladder, as the Lightning strive for consecutive finals appearances.

“The next four games are crucial for us and we’re going for four wins,” McAuliffe said.

“The fact that three of the teams are below us is obviously something we’ve looked at. If we’re looking at who deserves to be in finals, we need to get wins against those three to really cement our spot.”
