Tax office set for $ 25m base on Flinders St

- ANDREW BACKHOUSE

THE next stage of a $ 450 million master- planned project in the heart of Townsville, which is expected to inject $ 60.3 million into the economy, has been unveiled.

A detailed look at Honeycombes Property Group’s plans for an office building – ultimately to house the Australian Taxation Office – was revealed in a development application tendered to Townsville City Council.

The developer is proposing a commercial office expansion within its Central development at 534 Flinders St, Townsville City.

The 4800 sqm office space would house government offices and education- based activities and offer extended business hours.

The project is within council’s Townsville City Waterfront Priority Development Area and is subject to special approvals.

Its estimated value is $ 25 million, which includes extensive landscaping and civic works as well as waterfront walkways. The proposal is to construct a four- storey office development to the south of the CQU campus.

The main entrance to the building would be via Mayfair Lane through a revolving glass door.

Three of the levels would have open- plan office space and the ground floor would have 10 parking spaces.

Construction could be finished by October next year.

“( Honeycombes) has worked very hard, in terms of the proposed layout of the development, to maximise activation of Ross Creek,” the application states.

The new development is expected to make a “significant contribution” to the Townsville economy through the construction phase and ongoing activities.

About $ 10.5 million of the $ 25 million would be spent directly on goods and services within the Townsville area, according to the developers. Council is assessing the application.
