Firies to get new recruits

EIGHT new Townsville firefighters are part of an “unprecedented” commitment of new firies for Queensland.

Fire and Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford said 20 new firefighters would be based in communities from Townsville to Cairns, and west to Mount Isa.

One of the 20 Charters Towers.

Mr Crawford said the allocation of the firefighters was based on Queensland Fire and Emergency Services’ operational response priorities.

Thuringowa MP Aaron Harper said the firefighters were a welcome addition to Townsville and North Queensland, particularly given the need for them during natural disasters.

Townsville MP Scott Stewart said it would help build on the first- class work already being done by emergency services workers.

News of the additional firefighters comes as the Northern Australia Seasonal Bushfire Outlook 2018 is released.

The report shows there is above normal fire potential for areas along the Central Coast, will be in Whitsundays and cornia region.

An average fire season is expected for Townsville.

Rural Fire Services regional manager Superintendent Tony Hazell said even though it seemed there had been heavy rainfall in Townsville this year, in reality it was an average season.

“So when people ask what type fire season will we have, I think it will just be an average season,” he said.

However, Supt Hazell said the possibility of El Nino developing could have ramifications for the fire season.

Typically drier than average conditions and less rain are associated with an El Nino effect.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s model outlooks indicate there is roughly double the average chance of El Nino forming.

Supt Hazell said this could extend the fire season and make things more difficult for firefighters.

“I’m expecting an average season but I’m conscious it could be a prolonged season,” he said.

Right now, though, was the perfect time to get properties prepared, Supt Hazell said.

“Making sure fire breaks are in place and equipment is ready is important,” he said.

“It sounds simple but you have to be ready.” the Capri-
