Family drives O’Neill return

- JON TUXWORTH

HE’S been given an NRL lifeline but playing for his firstgrade future won’t be the only motivation for Cowboy Justin O’Neill against the Dragons tomorrow after the birth of his second child.

O’Neill and wife Chantelle welcomed a second daughter into the world on Tuesday, the same day the 27- year- old was recalled to the Cowboys side after a two- game Queensland Cup stint with Townsville Blackhawks.

The “Cowboys creche” is growing, with hooker Jake Granville also recently becoming a father, while Kane Linnett and John Asiata’s partners are soon expecting their first and second children, respectively.

Having struggled for form this year, regular centre O’Neill will play wing for the first time since 2015 against the Dragons, and has taken up an option in his favour to remain at the Cowboys next year.

“He’s come back a very positive person, especially having his bub,” Asiata said.

“It’s another thing for him to play for; having two kids probably isn’t easy and I’ll be at that stage soon. There’s actually a fair crew. Jake’s got one, I’m not far away and also Kane. It’s going to be a busy pre season and off season for everyone, looking after their little ones. No more partying, it’s time to knuckle down, just stay home and help the wives.”

Asiata returned from a three- month lay- off from a pectoral tear in last week’s 38- 12 loss in Canberra, where they conceded four tries in the last 15 minutes.

He said Johnathan Thurston’s pending retirement wasn’t the only motivation, with a handful of teammates also expected to move on to other clubs as the second- last Cowboys refresh their squad.

“It’s been tough knowing you can’t do anything or help the boys out on the field,” Asiata said. “We need to finish well and play for pride in the jersey. Obviously it’s JT’s last year and there’ll be some boys who may not be here next year.

“We want to play for each other, and finish off strong.”

Winger Gideon GelaMosby returned to training this week after he was stood down for being charged with unlicensed driving.

The 20- year- old has a golden chance to impress, with some Cowboys outside back spots up for grabs next year.

“It’s good to see the young fella back, I've had a chat to him that if he needs any help that I’m here to talk to,” Asiata said. “Hopefully he can find his way, and work his way back in.

“There’s a lot of boys here that tend to help the younger boys out.”
